What is Spinal DSA?
Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) – Spinal is a specialized, minimally invasive imaging technique used to visualize the blood vessels of the spine in great detail. By using contrast dye and advanced X-ray technology, DSA provides high-resolution images that help detect vascular abnormalities, such as spinal AVMs (arteriovenous malformations), fistulas, or tumors affecting spinal blood flow.
This procedure “subtracts” pre-contrast images from contrast-enhanced images, offering a clearer view of spinal vasculature without interference from surrounding bone or tissue.

When is Spinal DSA Recommended?
Spinal DSA is often advised when patients present with:
-
Unexplained chronic back pain with neurological deficits
-
Sudden onset of limb weakness or paralysis
-
Signs suggestive of spinal vascular malformations or tumors
-
Recurrent spinal hemorrhages
-
Suspicion of spinal dural AV fistula or AVMs
-
Spinal cord ischemia or infarction
It plays a crucial role in diagnosis when MRI/MRA findings are inconclusive or require vascular confirmation.
